Falling stocks, wounded unicorns and rising interest rates translated into a down year for the world's wealthiest people. Globally, we counted 2,640 ten-figure fortunes, down from 2,668 last year. Altogether, the planet's billionaires are now worth $12.2 trillion, a drop of $500 billion from $12.7 trillion in March 2022. Nearly half the list is poorer than a year ago, including Elon Musk, who falls from No. 1 to No. 2 after his pricey acquisition of Twitter helped sink Tesla shares. Bernard Arnault, head of luxury goods giant LVMH, takes his place as the world's richest person, marking the first time a citizen of France leads the ranking. The United States still boasts the most billionaires, with 735 list members worth a collective $4.5 trillion. China (including Hong Kong and Macau) remains second, with 562 billionaires worth $2 trillion, followed by India, with 169 billionaires worth $675 billion. If you've been taking a certain medication for many years, you might assume it's fine to continue it as you get older. But physicians say that many people may be ingesting what they refer to as “potentially inappropriate medications”—drugs that may no longer be safe because of advancing age or the onset of new medical conditions. A study in an August 2023 issue of JAMA Network showed 37 percent of adults 65 and older worldwide have been using potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). Taking the wrong drugs can lead to an increase in adverse reactions, emergency department visits, and a decline in quality of life.  How? By increasing the risk of falls, delirium, depression, dizziness, confusion, balance problems, dementia, hallucinations, bleeding (in the stomach or elsewhere), heart rhythm abnormalities, bone loss, and urinary retention complications. Continued here You Might Like � � � � � � � � � Ocean cleanup group deploys barges to capture plastic in rivers -     Interceptor 007 is a not-so-secret agent of trash collection at the mouth of a Los Angeles waterway. It's one of several barges belonging to The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch nonprofit founded by 29-year-old Boyan Slat. The Ocean Cleanup is on a mission to collect 90% of floating plastic pollution, including cleaning up the Great Pacific garbage patch, a collection of plastic debris and trash twice the size of Texas. The group is now focusing on rivers because its research shows that 80% of all plastic flowing into the ocean comes from just 1% of the world's rivers. "So if we tackle that 1% of rivers, we think we can have a tremendous impact in a relatively short amount of time," Slat told CBS News. Continued here
