Stop Feeling Guilty About Your To-Do List - Harvard Business Review (No paywall) Do you often feel guilty or frustrated at the end of your work day for not getting as much done as you had hoped? These emotions are neither useful, nor healthy. What can you do about them? Practice self-compassion. Recognize negative ruminations for what they are: a story you’re telling yourself. Seize the opportunity to reframe and reappraise the situation. You might realize that: “I did my best today and I hope to get more done tomorrow; my colleagues probably understand because they’re busy, too.” Getting pragmatic about your to-do list is also important. Be realistic about what can be reasonably accomplished over the course of your day. Try making peace with the notion that you’ll never be caught up, and you’ll always have things that you really wished you’d gotten to. If you can accept the constant state of non-completion, the guilt will eventually fade.

Work What Makes Work Meaningful -- Or Meaningless Meaningful work is something we all want. The psychiatrist Viktor Frankl famously described how the innate human quest for meaning is so strong that, even in the direst circumstances, people seek out their purpose in life.1 More recently, researchers have shown meaningfulness to be more important to employees than any other aspect of work, including pay and rewards, opportunities for promotion, or working conditions.2 Meaningful work can be highly motivational, leading to improved performance, commitment, and satisfaction.3 But, so far, surprisingly little research has explored where and how people find their work meaningful and the role that leaders can play in this process.4 Work
WorkDNC welcome party gatecrashed by pro-Palestinian protesters "150,000 people are dead," the protester yelled. "You are funding a genocide. The Harris-Biden administration keeps sending money to Israel." People in the audience could be heard chanting "free Palestine" as the protester was escorted off the stage by security. WorkTom Brady on the Art of Leading Teammates - Harvard Business Review (No paywall) When our society talks about leaders, we focus on formal roles, such as the CEO. This view undervalues the role of informal leaders—team members who influence outcomes by the tone they set, how they conduct themselves, and how they interact with their peers. Their job title doesn’t include the word “manager,” but they play an outsize role in how teams perform. WorkQ&A: A health justice lawyer and new MacArthur 'genius' on pharma's patent games - STAT (No paywall) The co-executive director of the nonprofit patent reform group I-MAK, Krishtel has spent the past two decades fighting for equitable access to drugs. She’s pretty pleased about the Democrats’ major new drug pricing reform law, “a significant win” that will let Medicare negotiate drug prices later this decade. But for Krishtel, it is also just one move. She says lawmakers need to pay closer attention, “because Americans are crying out for relief.” WorkHow AI's booms and busts are a distraction “Is this all hype and no substance?” is a question more people have been asking lately about generative AI, pointing out that there have been delays in model releases, that commercial applications have been slow to emerge, that the success of open source models makes it harder to make money off proprietary ones, and that this whole thing costs a whole lot of money. WorkWhy Is This Colorado Church Putting Its Chapel On The Blockchain? - Forbes (No paywall) In the Middle Ages, the Church held sway over souls with the sale of indulgences—essentially, money in the form of silver or gold coins exchanged for a faster ticket out of purgatory. Fast forward to the 21st century in Northern Colorado, where a different kind of church token is being offered—one that doesn’t promise salvation but instead aims to purchase Fort Collins’ oldest church. Work WorkHouse G.O.P. Makes Impeachment Case Against Biden Without Proof of Crime Still, Republicans assert that they do not need to prove that Mr. Biden personally profited from his son’s business deals, accepted a bribe or otherwise committed a crime because, they argue in part, Democrats lowered the threshold for impeachment with their pursuit of President Donald J. Trump in 2019. Work WorkCouche-Tard Seeks to Buy $31 Billion Owner of 7-Eleven Stores Isaka has spent more than $25 billion expanding Seven & i’s global foot print, especially in the US, where he added the Speedway and Sunoco gasoline-station networks. WorkThe Kamala Show - The New Yorker (No paywall) If you’re looking for threads of consistency spanning Kamala Harris’s career in public, start with this: the Democratic nominee for President likes to work and hang out and have fun and be seen with her close kin. Maya Harris, her younger sister—a Stanford-educated lawyer, a former law-school dean, and a policy adviser for Hillary Clinton in 2016—chaired Kamala’s 2020 Presidential campaign and can often be seen at her side. Maybe it’s this instinctive family intimacy, so hard to fake, that keeps me replaying a video of Kamala and Maya, chatting with an unseen interviewer from the Daily Beast, in 2012. Maya’s talking about how her sister’s climb up the political ladder has caused a teasing fracas between the sisters on the topic of ceremonial titles. Kamala was, at the time, California’s attorney general. WorkWorkHow better posture can improve your overall health - Science (No paywall) There is more to optimizing health and improving longevity than exercise and eating more fruits and vegetables. Maintaining proper posture is vital for living a fuller life and avoiding negative health outcomes such as neck and back pain, respiratory issues, poor sports performance, digestive problems, muscle fatigue, and hormone imbalance—issues that can worsen in time if not corrected. WorkRussia's double-punch back against Ukraine's shock raid - The Economist (No paywall) The order to move crackled over the radios at dawn on August 6th. Serhiy, a private in the 80th brigade, was among the first to emerge from the cover of the forest. By the time his unit crossed into Russia, supported by constant tank fire, the border had already been largely destroyed. “Our commanders didn’t spare a single round of artillery,” he says via voice messages from inside Russia’s Kursk region. Other Ukrainian troops report crossing the border on a wave of euphoria, with lines of prisoners almost immediately heading back in the other direction. WorkA guide to the 2024 Democratic National Convention This year will look slightly different from others, as the Democratic Party has already officially nominated Vice-President Kamala Harris in a virtual roll call after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. WorkWorkWorkWorkDemocrats' Unity Convention Has One Giant Exception: The Gaza War Despite such efforts, the convention will be shadowed by large protests against the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to a war that Gaza health authorities say has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that left 1,200 people dead in Israel. WorkWorkWorkOpinion | Kamala Harris Takes Her First Big Risk Bret: On the other hand, as Catherine Rampell of The Washington Post pointed out last week, if your opponent is going to call you a “communist,” it might be wiser not to propose legislation worthy of Venezuela. Or is there some political logic at work here that I’m missing? Work3 Women With Harrowing Pregnancy Stories Will Speak at Convention And Hadley Duvall of Kentucky, the third woman, talked about her experience being raped as a child by her stepfather in a pivotal campaign ad for Gov. Andy Beshear last year. Last month, the Biden campaign, before the president decided to end his re-election bid and support Vice President Kamala Harris, released a searing spot in which Ms. Duvall recounted how the years of sexual abuse resulted in a pregnancy when she was 12 years old. She miscarried but has said “the idea of politicians forcing me to give birth to my rapist’s baby is unconscionable.” Work2 Magnificent S&P 500 Dividend Stocks Down 20% to Buy and Hold Forever John Mackey, former CEO of Whole Foods Market, an Amazon subsidiary, is a member of The Motley Fool\'s board of directors. WorkWorkWorkWorkHow a Far-Right Takeover of Georgia's Election Board Could Swing the Election “Clearly, the Trump allies have learned their lessons from the failure of the attempted coup of 2020, and they’re starting earlier and attempting to burrow more deeply into the most vulnerable pieces of the election system,” said Norm Eisen, a longtime Washington lawyer and chair of the State Democracy Defenders Fund, a nonpartisan election watchdog group. WorkWorkA Deadly Fire Exposes the Plight of Low-Paid Migrants in Wealthy Kuwait The high death toll from the fire in June — which engulfed a seven-story building where nearly 200 migrant workers lived — shocked people across Kuwait. In the weeks after the tragedy, it spurred an unusually public reckoning over unsafe housing for migrant workers, as inspectors fanned out to issue building code violations. WorkWorkOpinion | On Cat Ladies, Mama Bears and 'Momala' All female political candidates are expected to narrate their motherhood status or, at least, their mother-like qualities. But no other presidential candidate had to meet this challenge the way Harris will. Watching this campaign wrestle with the G.O.P.’s motherhood purity test, so far, has been a lesson in how not to fall for dog whistle traps. WorkEnergy price cap expected to rise by 9% in October \"While we don\'t expect a return to the extreme prices of recent years, it\'s unlikely that bills will return to what was once considered normal. Don't You? Yet hate-watching is now part of the cultural conversation and arguably contemporary life. Chalk it up to morbid curiosity: We start watching a show because it looks appealing, but we keep watching because we want to complain about it at happy hour. It’s fun to be the person who describes a particularly terrible story arc or performance to our friends’ disbelief. Besides, it’s better than whatever is on the news. |
