Music as a medium of protest, or the protest song has a rich history in various countries around the world, including India. In India, it was dominant during the British Raj, as ordinary Indians rallied with songs like 'Bande Mataram' and 'Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna' to feel pride for the nation and protest against colonization. In recent times, the country's favourite musicians have mostly steered clear of politics or social issues in their work. Some artistes, though, are breaking the mould, using music to attest to their very different experiences of living across India, from the disadvantaged slums of New Delhi to the conflict zones of Kashmir.
