The Whatsapp founders have mentioned several times that there will be no ads on Whatsapp. The annual fee is gone and would never have worked as a serious revenue stream anyway. As this article mentions, they may soon start personalizing Facebook ads based on your Whatsapp conversations. One thing that has already started happening is friend suggestions on Facebook based on your Whatsapp contacts.
