It started with the iPod and iMac. Then came the iPhone and iPad. And more recently, the Apple Watch and AirPods. But there's a lot more to the biggest U.S. company by market cap than just gadgets. At its Silicon Valley headquarters, in a non-descript room filled with a couple hundred buzzing machines and a handful of engineers in lab coats, Apple is designing the custom chips that power its most popular products. Apple first debuted homegrown semiconductors in the iPhone 4 in 2010. As of this year, all new Mac computers are powered by Apple's own silicon, ending the company's 15-plus years of reliance on Intel. Go ad-free with TradeBriefs Premium How The Steep Decline In Chinese Tourists Will Cost The U.S. More Than $20 Billion - Forbes    Two weeks ago, China announced it is lifting restrictions on group travel to the United States and several other countries, a move that U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo hailed as “a significant win for the U.S. travel and tourism industry.” Then she cut to the heart of the matter: U.S. tourism officials are pining for the return of Chinese tourists, by far the biggest spenders among global travelers. “Before Covid,” Raimondo said, “as many as three million Chinese travelers visited the United States annually, contributing more than $30 billion to the U.S. economy.” In 2019, 2.8 million Chinese visitors accounted for only 4% of all inbound foreign travelers to the U.S., yet they accounted for 13% of spending. This year, fewer than 850,000 Chinese will travel here, according to the National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO), the agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce that tracks tourism statistics. That 68% drop in traveler volume translates to more than $20 billion that Chinese visitors will not spend in the U.S. this year. Three months after the official end of the pandemic, the U.S. tourism industry is still in recovery mode. Before Covid, 79.4 million international visitors to the U.S. injected roughly $239 billion into the national economy, accounting for nearly 10% of America’s total exports and services. In 2023, the U.S. expects to welcome 62.8 million foreign visitors–a 21% year-over-year jump but still 21% below pre-Covid numbers. Inbound travel volume to the U.S. is not expected to hit pre-pandemic levels until 2025. Continued here � � � � � � You Might Like � � � � � � � � � The Type of Charisma That Saves a Holiday Party - The Atlantic    Last March, the Stanford computer-science student Bryan Chiang posted a video on Twitter (now called X) of a project he called “rizzGPT,” which intended to provide “real-time charisma.” Essentially, it combines an augmented-reality device and ChatGPT to listen to your conversations and display what you should say next. The idea was to outsource charisma—that alluring, mysterious, stubbornly human trait that draws people to you. The prototype’s inability to say anything charming in the video demonstration emphasized just how elusive true magnetism can be. Still, the project was only the latest in a lineage of attempts to distill charisma for an individual’s benefit—perhaps as a tool to win people’s attention, vote, or money. In the 1920s, the German sociologist Max Weber’s posthumous writings introduced our modern understanding of charisma as authority based on exceptionalism, a quality that distinguishes popular politicians. In 1936, Dale Carnegie published his seminal self-help book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, a guide to being liked and listened to; a professional-development program based on his teachings persists to this day. Now the YouTube channel Charisma On Command offers tutorials on how to reverse-engineer social power by, say, studying the way the Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston transforms in the show from a meek chemistry teacher into a commanding drug kingpin by straightening his shoulders, speaking slowly, and maintaining eye contact. There’s a whole charisma-commercialization complex full of coaches, authors, and now computer scientists, ready to teach you social hacks to get what you want. Yet charisma does not have to be self-serving. In Greek, charisma translates as a “gift.” Rather than keep that gift to exploit for themselves, some charismatic people disperse it. They hand it out at social events, such as the holiday parties at this time of year, and use it to guide the energy of a shared occasion. I call these people vibe popes. Consider it a nondenominational title for those who unite people under the divine light of a good time. Continued here
