Medical researchers at Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh have eliminated HIV in mice using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The somewhat controversial technology allows researchers to splice individual DNA with the objective of preventing replication. Three mouse models were used, including one which was infected with the Human HIV virus. Human trials are still some time away, but this could be the beginning of a solution to a problem that has evaded scientists for decades now. CRISPR/Cas9 has potentially more powerful/dangerous uses.
