While the trial is happening in Finland, the European Union wants at least 80% of citizens in the 27-country bloc to be using a digital ID by 2030. The pilot program, which started at the end of August, is available only to Finnish citizens. It is running at Helsinki Airport as a partnership between Finnair, airport operator Finavia and the Finnish police. Through the end of February 2024, Finnair passengers flying to and from three United Kingdom airports can pass through border control using new voluntary "Digital Travel Credential" (DTC). Raja, the Finnish Border Guard, says travelers using the new digital credentials can "pass through border control faster and smoother than usual without queuing." Their efforts generated the now-famous 1972 paper "The Limits to Growth," in which they modeled what might lie in wait for humanity. It wasn't a pretty picture. The world, they predicted, was on a trajectory to overshoot its capacity to support continued growth at some point in the first half of this century. Continuing with business as usual—burning through resources while polluting the environment and pumping out carbon—would result in a "sudden and uncontrollable decline" in food production, population, and industrial output by the end of the 21st century. Or put simply, global collapse. Fast forward 50 years, and humanity is still in deep trouble. In 2020, econometrician Gaya Herrington revisited and updated the Club of Rome's modeling to see whether we've shifted off this terrible trajectory and found that we've barely moved the needle. But while we're still on this dire path, all hope is not lost. WIRED spoke to Herrington to find out what she thinks might happen, how humankind can safeguard its future, and how we have a chance to step up and not just survive, but thrive. If organizations want to inspire their workers, they must clearly communicate why they’re in business and what value they provide. When employees understand and embrace those things, their companies thrive: Survey results show that more than 90% of companies with a well-defined purpose deliver growth and profits at or above the industry average. An effective purpose statement, the authors say, answers several questions: Why does our organization exist? Who are we serving? What value do we offer, and why are we uniquely capable of providing it? But a powerful statement is not enough; firms must also deliver on their promises to customers. That requires putting the right people in the right roles, breaking down silos to facilitate cross-functional collaboration, investing in the areas that matter most, and ensuring that leaders demonstrate every day, through their words and actions, their commitment to the firm’s articulated goals. Many employees feel disconnected from their organization’s purpose. In a recent survey, just 39% said they could clearly see the value they create. More than half weren’t even “somewhat” motivated, passionate, or excited about their jobs. Continued here
