It is hardly surprising that pregnancy and childbirth, nine months of enormous changes to a woman’s body, also change her brain. And they do, by causing certain parts of it to shrink. Fathers, it might be thought, would be unaffected. But no. There is evidence that their brains shrink, too. A paper just published in Cerebral Cortex by Magdalena Martínez-García of the Gregorio Marañón Health Research Institute in Madrid, and her colleagues, divulges the details. Dr Martínez-García’s study followed a group of 40 expectant fathers, 20 from Spain and 20 from America, and also, as a control, 17 Spanish men who did not have a baby on the way. To measure changes to their brains the volunteers underwent two magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) scans roughly a year apart. In the case of the new fathers, one of these scans was before, and the other after, the birth of the child. Research conducted by the University of Milan, environmental lobby group Greenpeace and the Italian Glaciological Committee has projected that by 2060, at least 80 per cent of Italy’s glaciers will vanish. If proven accurate, the repercussions could extend to prolonged and intensified droughts, hurt agriculture in the region, speed up climate change, impact the winter sports industry and notably alter mountain landscapes. More and more holiday destinations are aiming to attract considerate, well-off vacationers, seeking to promote high-class tourism. “We no longer want to measure the success of tourism in terms of sheer visitor numbers, but also by other qualitative criteria,” states Berlin’s current tourism concept, for example. After German reunification, Berlin experienced a rapid tourism boom. This development paid off handsomely for some but caused considerable annoyance for others. Christian Tänzler of the city marketing agency visitBerlin says that over time, Berlin locals have grown increasingly irritated with mass tourism. “For a long time, the focus was entirely on growth in visitor numbers,” says Tänzler. But if tourism is to be sustainable, he adds, it must carefully balance the needs of tourists and locals. Continued here
