Go ad-free with TradeBriefs Premium Whether a Husband Identifies as a Breadwinner Depends on Whether He Respects His Wife's Career — Not on How Much She Earns    A new study suggests that while some men still fall back on the classic identity of a breadwinner, others adopt a modern identity of a “breadsharer.” In-depth interviews with 42 heterosexual male consultants showed that more than half (about 60%) value their wives’ careers. These men, the breadsharers, described their wives’ work in glowing terms, regarding it as high status, worthy of respect, and financially important to their families. For the 40% of the men who identified as traditional breadwinners, it was another story. These men accorded low social status to their wives’ work and minimized their financial contributions — even when their wives earned six-figure salaries, and even when their wives earned most of the family income. In our conversations about work, career, and couples, we often focus on earnings and work hours. This study shows that status plays a vital role as well (notably, no wife who was a doctor or a lawyer found her earnings marginalized, no matter her salary). Salaries are more than dollars and cents; they have a social meaning and that meaning is quite malleable. Professional careers are notorious for demanding that people be single-mindedly devoted to work. It’s a demand that is often especially acute for men, who face rigid expectations that being a successful man requires having a successful career, and that “success” means power and money. Men have traditionally satisfied these expectations by taking on the role of a work-devoted breadwinner, supported by a wife who does not work or who places his career first. But many heterosexual men today are married to women who pursue demanding careers of their own; moreover, many women expect that their husbands will support their careers and be more engaged in family life than previous generations of men have been. Just after 1am local time (midnight BST), police in Gothenburg received reports of two explosions at separate addresses, 10 minutes apart. “Both sites have been cordoned off and technical investigations are ongoing,” police said, adding that the national bomb squad had been called to the scene. “There are no reports of people being injured, only material damage,” police said. While this form of sex isn’t typically associated with reproduction, generating offspring without a partner is common in small, spineless animals like sea stars and stick insects, but it is more rare in vertebrates. Through a process called parthenogenesis, some female animals in the order elasmobranch that includes sharks, rays, and skates can fertilize an egg using their own genetic material.  This process is usually reserved as a last resort for sharks if there aren’t any mates to go around, but a recent study revealed that female zebra sharks at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, reproduced by themselves, even though there were healthy males in the same enclosure.
