From the Editor's Desk
So, Twitter India's revenues have tripled this year to Rs 13.26 cr from Rs 4.17 cr last year. This is 0.12% of Twitter's global revenues of $1.59 billion. While Twitter doesn't provide a region-wise breakup of its users, an eMarketer report suggests around 20 million Twitter users in India, which puts it at around 7% of overall Twitter users. So, 0.12% of revenues from 7% of its users. Facebook made around 0.50% of its revenues from India last year, with a user base which is around 10% of its global user count. Google has a similar ratio. The entire digital advertising market in India is only around Rs 5000cr, with several hundred ad networks and publishers vying for a piece of this pie. So, what's going on? Yes, our users monetize less, which is in proportion to our per-capita income, which is much lower than the US or UK. But that's not the whole story. Our user numbers might be large, but usage is still low. Most internet users still can't afford data and use it sparingly to 'whatsapp' each other or watch videos every once in a while, purchasing prepaid packs. Will the launch of the much awaited Reliance Jio and the subsequent competition amongst telcos reduce data prices enough to increase usage? Will this change the game for digital media companies in India? - Comment
