Alibaba is struggling to fix its reputation as a haven for cheap knock-offs and counterfeit goods, a big problem in the Chinese market. Alibaba is forced to work on this problem because it has ambitions to aggressively expand its customer base in America, where it is now publicly listed and where customer expectations are higher. In China, the problem is compounded by the fact that many customers want to buy cheaper knock-offs and Alibaba does not want to lose them to competitors. Indian customers are not very different and Indian e-commerce marketplaces have even fewer checks on whether merchants are selling counterfeit goods. Brands will have to be more vigilant to ensure that their sales are not affected. The chor-bazaars and fashion streets are now online! - Comment
